European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
